The Walled Kitchen Garden – Hampshire

The walled kitchen garden has long been a distinctive feature of large manor houses, providing a space for growing fruits, vegetables, and herbs. These gardens were often carefully designed and meticulously maintained by skilled gardeners.

This new development aims to sensitively restore the walled kitchen garden, reflecting a commitment to preserving the heritage of the site. By ensuring that the majority of the building is positioned below the level of the historic garden walls, the design seeks to protect the integrity and prominence of these key features. In addition, lightweight cedar-clad boxes are incorporated to complement and reflect the natural surroundings, particularly the tree canopies that rise above the garden walls.

Furthermore, the inclusion of period features from the surrounding conservation area in the design of the kitchen garden houses demonstrates a dedication to maintaining a harmonious relationship with the site’s historical context. By blending historical elements with contemporary design, the development strikes a balance between preservation and modernisation, ensuring the long-term preservation of the walled kitchen garden.
