The Walled Kitchen Garden – Hampshire
The walled kitchen garden has long been a defining feature of large manor houses throughout history. Serving as a place to grow fruits, vegetables, and herbs for the manor house, these gardens were often meticulously designed and tended to by skilled gardeners.
This new build development, aims to sensitively restoring the walled kitchen garden, reflecting a commitment to preserving the heritage of the site. By ensuring that the majority of the building mass is below the level of the historic garden walls, the development seeks to maintain the integrity and prominence of the historic features. Additionally, the design incorporates light weight cedar clad boxes that serve to complement and reflect the natural surroundings, particularly the tree canopies of the site that pop-up above the historic garden walls.
Furthermore, the integration of period features from the wider conservation area into the design of the kitchen garden houses demonstrates a dedication to maintaining a harmonious relationship with the site and its historical context. By blending historic elements with contemporary design, the development showcases a balance between preservation and modernization, contributing to the longevity of the walled kitchen garden.
